What is the McKenzie MDT?

McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy

What is MDT? MCKENZIE METHOD®

The most important aspect of this therapy is that you can TREAT YOURSELF!

We use the gold standard for spinal and joint stabilization known as the McKenzie Method® , or Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). This is a widely researched and evidence based system of assessment and therapy for neck and back pain, spinal instability, knee and hip dysfunction, as well as all joints that may be causing your symptoms.

The treatment protocols were developed by physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in New Zealand and is used today by neuromuscular physicians such as Doctors of Chiropractic, Doctors of Physical Therapy, Orthopedic Surgeons, Neurologists, and more.

The cornerstones of MDT:

  • Active patient involvement
  • Education about your problem
  • Self-management exercises for relief
  • Learn how to stop and reduce recurrences

MDT involves:

  • A thorough history and mechanical assessment
  • Determination of specific exercises and methods
  • Education about why you developed your problem and the way to resolve it

How MDT differs to traditional Physical Therapy:

  • Assessment process involves testing of repeated movements and sustained positions
  • Determines which exercise you'll perform, to “treat yourself” for fast relief
  • Focus on strategies for self-management

Why you ought to demand a MDT assessment:

  • Highly efficient and cost-effective with a minimum number of visits (typically 3-5)
  • Around 70-80% of patients are ‘responders’ experiencing rapid relief
  • Those ‘non-responders’ are identified efficiently (typically within 1-2 sessions) and
  • Expensive imaging like MRI is rarely necessary given the effectiveness of the assessment method to properly classify the source of your problem
